Born into an ecclesiastical family 〔(His father was a former Canon of Monmouth )〕 on 11 May 1906 and educated at Monkton Combe School 〔Who’s Who 1992 (London, A & C Black, 1991 ISBN 0-7136-3514-2〕 and Balliol College, Oxford, he was ordained in 1933. His first post was as a Curate at Penistone after which he was Padre to the Tanker Fleet of the ''Anglo-Saxon Petroleum Company'' and then Vicar of Forest Row. When World War II came he enlisted as a Chaplain in the RNVR during which he was twice decorated. When peace returned he was Vicar of Rogate and Rural Dean of Midhurst before his elevation to the Deanery. After this he was Rector of St Peter’s, Peebles〔”Scottish Episcopal Clergy, 1689-2000” Bertie, D.M: Edinburgh T & T Clark ISBN 0-567-08746-8〕 before retiring in 1971.〔''Crockford's Clerical Directory'' 1975-76 London: Oxford University Press, 1976 ISBN 0-19-200008-X〕 "A sailor's padre to the end",〔(Independent Obituary )〕 he died on 18 December 1992.
